Here's what no one tells you about teen anxiety: it often doesn't look like what you'd expect. It doesn't always look like a nervous kid wringing their hands. Sometimes it looks like a teenager who refuses to go to school. Or who seems fine in public and falls completely apart the moment they walk in your front door. Or who picks fights with you about nothing, because the real thing they can't name is terror.

Root Causes
Teen anxiety almost never has a single cause. In our experience, teenagers who walk through our doors have usually been carrying several of these things at once — sometimes for years.
- An anxious brain that was never given a real toolkit. Anxiety is partly neurological — some teens are simply wired to feel threat more intensely. But when that brain never learns concrete, practiced skills for regulation, anxiety will fill every available space.
- A story that says 'I'm not safe' or 'I can't cope.' Anxiety isn't just a feeling — it's a narrative. Over time, many anxious teens have built an entire identity around their anxiety. Our Narrative Therapy approach works directly at this level — because the story a teen tells about themselves is one of the most powerful levers for real change.
- Avoidance that has become its own prison. Every time a teen sidesteps something anxiety-provoking, their brain files it away as confirmation that the thing was dangerous. Over time, the world gets smaller and smaller. Breaking this cycle requires structured, supported work.
- Something deeper underneath the anxiety. Many teens present with anxiety on the surface and something else underneath — trauma, family stress, academic pressure, shame. We don't just treat what we can see. We go looking for what's driving it.

- Daily DBT skills — Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation, Mindfulness — practiced in real time within a community of peers doing the same work.
- Narrative Therapy helps teens separate themselves from their anxiety. The anxiety is not who they are — it's something that's been happening to them.
- CBT work interrupts the thought spirals and cognitive distortions that keep anxiety going long after the original threat is gone.
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) teaches teens to stop fighting every anxious feeling and start moving toward what actually matters to them.
- Trauma-informed yoga addresses what anxiety does in the body — the physical tension, the shallow breathing, the chronic state of bracing — in ways that talking cannot reach.
- The peer group is often the most powerful part. Being in a room with other teenagers who get it — who don't need the anxiety explained — is something that can't be replicated in a one-on-one session.
